    Construction Trades and Pre-Apprenticeship

    The Construction Trades and Pre-Apprenticeship program provides experience in the skilled trades through classroom learning and paid internships. Skilled trades include crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, auto mechanics, electrical work and more. Students will intern under the supervision of a journey-level mentor. Internships sponsors include City of Seattle, King County, King County Dept. of Transportation, Painters and Allied Trades, and Port of Seattle. After high school, students have the opportunity for possible direct entry into an apprenticeship.

    Students will apply a combination of theory and hands-on-experiences in the construction of several projects to prepare for entry level positions in the construction industry.

    Location: Rainier Beach High School

    First Year

    During the first year, students receive instruction in safety, hand and power tool usage, construction mathematics, building codes and building plans.  Projects include building a carpenter's toolbox, designing a set of building plans, building a shed and scale model house, and working off-campus on a project.

    Second Year

    During the second year, students receive advance instruction in safety, pneumatic tool usage, construction mathematics, and interpretation of  engineered building plans.  The second year program provides the opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills through the construction of a residential home including site preparation, foundation construction, floor and wall construction, roof construction, siding, trim, windows and door installation.

    Course Objectives:

    Students will be able to perform the following tasks:  use construction trades tools safely, interpret building plans, build several construction projects.

    Benefits/Certifications/Tech Prep:

    • 1.5 Occupational Ed credits OR 1.0 Occupational Ed credit + .5 Math credit
    • 2 semesters - 1.5 credits per semester
    • Math Cross-Credit Available

    Pre-Requisites Recommended:

    • Year 1 Wood
    • Year 2 Skills Center Construction Trades and Pre-Apprenticeship Year 1


    • Math Cross-Credit Available

    Other Requirements:

    • Upon acceptance into the program, student and parent/guardian must participate in the Orientation/Interview at the Skills Center
