    Seattle FerryMaritime Operations ­– From Deck to Engine Room

    Learn how to work on ships in Puget Sound! This course blends modern and traditional seamanship and deckhand skills with training in engine maintenance and repair. 

    You’ll learn what it takes to work on fishing vessels, ferryboats, cargo ships and more!

    You’ll develop fundamental skills in navigation, tides, currents, boat handling, knots, safety, communications, radar, meteorology, tool use, and marine engine maintenance and repair. These skills will prepare you for summer jobs and further training after high school that could result in Coast Guard certification.

    Sail Your Way to .5 CTE Credit in Summer

    After completing one of our maritime operations courses, you could join other high school students on a 14-day adventure in the San Juan Islands. Departing in early August, you will serve as crew on a 26-foot oar and sail-powered vessel. Build your fundamental skills as a sailor, navigator, and leader while earning a .5 Career and Technical Education (CTE) credit.  

    • Learn how to navigate currents and tides as you visit some of the small islands in the Salish Sea.
    • Build teamwork and leadership skills as you and your crew voyage from island to island.

    Space is limited so apply early.

    This course will be available only to students who participated in the summer Skills Center Maritime Operations Course or the regular school year Maritime Operations course. Some lab fees may apply.
